News
from Edible Phoenix
September 2006
Dear
Charter Members of the Edible Phoenix Community,
Have you signed up with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm for the fall season? If not, you may be disappointed as they are filling up fast and some of them are even moving to a waitlist.
A
CSA is like having your own private farmer
(well maybe I should say a local farmer
you share with other Valley CSA members).
At the beginning of the season the CSA sells
multi-month shares which entitle members
to a portion of the produce grown on the
farm each week. Depending on the CSA, you
either pick up or have delivered a bag or
box with an assortment of that week's vegetables
straight from the farmer's field.
Although
the CSAs will tell you the type of produce
they typically include in their deliveries
each season, part of the fun is discovering
what's in your bag each week. For me it's
like opening a present—I greet each offering
with the giddy anticipation of a small child
on Christmas morning. Once I unwrap my bounty,
I pull out the recipe books and plan what
I'll cook for the upcoming week. The corn
will be tonight's dinner as I think it's
best eaten right from the field. The baby
greens are so delicate they can become a
salad. Zucchini will be a side dish later
in the week. And then there are the turnips
again. Since they're not my favorite vegetable
I'm always on the lookout for creative new
recipes. Maybe something Asian this time
. . .
