News from Edible Phoenix
May 2006

Dear Charter Members of the Edible Phoenix Community,

The Summer issue of Edible Phoenix has arrived hot on the heels of the Valley's first 100 degree day for 2006. Click on Get a Copy to find a distribution location near you. You may also order your own subscription from the website, and we'll mail a copy straight to your air-conditioned abode.

I had an "aha" moment when I read this issue's article on Spinach Cookies. Author Sharon Salomon explains why I open the refrigerator, stare directly at my freshly-cut carrots, radishes and red peppers and then hunt madly for that last piece of dark chocolate that's buried way back on the shelf somewhere. She says it has to do with nature, nurture and whether or not we're supertasters. Read Sharon's article and then take the supertaster test on the Edible Phoenix website.

If you are inspired by our luscious peach cover and decide to go peach picking this month, here a few hints for getting your precious fruit home:

  • Bring flat boxes or baskets, ideally with a little cushioning for your fruit. If you pile the peaches on top of each other, the ones on the bottom end up as peach soup.
  • When selecting the peaches, pick fruit at various stages of ripeness. Those that are bursting with juice are wonderful to eat in the hot sun right next to the tree. Those that are a little less ripe will be perfect for those cobblers and pies you plan to make tomorrow.
  • If you're making peach jam or peach chutney, check your ingredients and line up your pots and utensils before you even leave the house. Then when you come home from peach picking, you can go straight to work.
  • If you've been too enthusiastic and end up with too many ripe peaches anyhow, remember that even if the fruit doesn't look too appetizing, it makes wonderful fruit smoothies. Or you can whip up a batch of peach margaritas to serve with Julie Wood's peach salsa recipe found on page 14 of the Edible Phoenix Summer edition.

Warm regards,
