News
from Edible Phoenix
November 2005
Dear Charter Members of the Edible Phoenix Community,
Welcome
to Edible Phoenix and our celebration
of the abundance of the Valley, season by
season. There hasn't been a better time
to eat "locally" here in the Phoenix area
and we're excited about sharing our amazingly
diverse finds with you, our readers.
As
I've announced the news of Edible Phoenix
to the Valley, I've been asked "Why not
call the publication Edible Arizona?" There
are a few, very good reasons why we've chosen
the Edible Phoenix moniker. First, it is
the Edible Communities' philosophy to focus
on local food communities. With Edible
Phoenix encompassing all of Maricopa
and Gila Counties (Payson, Globe) and parts
of Pinal and Yavapai counties, we cover
quite a large territory. Second, we hope
to welcome sister publications in Tucson
and Northern Arizona in the future. Third,
even though we are focusing on the Valley,
we will have an Arizona Road Trip feature
that will bring you the best food experiences
the state has to offer.
We're
on schedule for the debut of Edible Phoenix's
first issue in February, 2006. The founding
members of Edible Communities, Tracey
Ryder and Carole Topalian, were here in
October to take photographs for Edible
Phoenix and to assist with all of the
logistics that go into producing a magazine.
Carole was literally working from dawn to
dusk (photographers love that light) and
from one end of the Valley to another (from
McClendon's Select in the Northwest Valley
to Queen Creek Olive Mill in the Southeast).
Tracey joined me for the annual Native Seed/Search
dinner at Janos Restaurant in Tucson (look
for more about the 10th anniversary of the
dinner in our Fall 2006 issue). We also
had a chance to chat with Kevin Dahl, the
Director of Native Seed/Search and a contributor
to Edible Phoenix.
The
Edible Communities founders brought
Kathy Couturié, the "roaming gourmet" with
them from Ojai. I pointed Kathy towards
all of my favorite places in the Valley
and set her loose to also uncover her own
finds. You'll hear all about her shopping
and dining adventures in the February (winter)
issue.
In
the next newsletter, I'll give you a sneak
preview of the articles in our first issue
and introduce you to some of our other contributors.
Meanwhile,
if you have any news or events you'd like
us to include in Edible Phoenix,
please send the information to newsevents@ediblephoenix.com.

Warm
regards,
